Lauren studied business science and served his time in the army before breaking into fashion. Lauren's empire was created in 1967, after he established the Polo label with a successful line of ties and opened his first ever tie shop, with no formal design training. Next came menswear, and in 1971 Lauren introduced his women's label. The chic, preppy look of his designer collections is now complemented by the whole gamut of sportswear, casual wear and home furnishings. Ralph Lauren fragrances were introduced in 1978 with Polo and Lauren. Today, Ralph Lauren fragrances are a division of L'Oreal and include brands such as Ralph Lauren Blue, Polo Sport and Ralph Lauren Romance.
