Leather goods company founded in 1913 when Mario Prada began selling Prada shoes and leather Prada handbags. The classic Prada suitcase was originally made of heavy walrus skin, but as plane travel made heavy suitcases impractical, the company started to make lighter bags, however, the company started to go into decline in the 1970's. In 1979 Miuccia Prada took over the familiy business, and since sales were down she expanded into luxury tote bags and back packs made from nylon. 1985 saw a line of footwear launched and her first pret-a-porter clothing line, using high quality fabrics. Her clean lines gave her fame,and she came to be known for under-stated elegant garments. 1995 saw her win the "Designer of the year" award. Prada is now a worldwide empire, with stores in practically every country in the western world. It is a multi-million dollar concern, with every celebrity wearing Prada clothes. Prada perfume is produced under arrangements with Puig.
